Do schools pay computer science teachers more than their colleagues who teach other subjects?

Do schools pay computer science teachers more than their colleagues who teach other subjects?

There is no simple, universal answer to this. A great deal depends on the cost of living in the state, local and state budgets, the school district’s policies, teacher union contracts, and how many years of experience they have. In general, though, computer science teachers often get higher salaries than teachers of other subjects due to simple market dynamics. Schools must pay more to attract and retain qualified candidates when demand exceeds supply.

In some cases, computer science teachers may also receive lower salaries than their colleagues. This can result from a lack of funding for computer science programs or because teachers with skills in other fields are hard to find.

In general, though, schools should offer competitive salaries and benefits to qualified computer science teachers. Jealousy surrounding remuneration is a fact of life in most workplaces, but this does not lessen a school’s responsibility to provide its students with the best education possible.
